About the Masterclass

A New Challenge for Psychology Supervisors

Artificial intelligence is transforming both psychological practice and professional education. Supervisees may be using AI scribes, analytical tools and conversational AI, while clients increasingly seek psychological advice from AI alongside traditional therapy.

For supervisors, these developments raise important questions about privacy, professional responsibility, clinical judgement and the assessment of genuine practitioner competence.

This practical, full-day masterclass takes neither a pro- nor anti-AI stance. Instead, it equips supervisors with frameworks for discussing, contracting, monitoring and evaluating AI use within the supervisory relationship.

What You'll Learn

Practical Skills for Contemporary Supervision

By the end of the masterclass, participants will be better equipped to:

  • Understand AI technologies and recognise how they are used in psychological practice.
  • Evaluate privacy, confidentiality and clinical governance risks associated with AI.
  • Establish clear expectations and boundaries for AI use in supervision contracts.
  • Assess genuine clinical reasoning and supervisee competence when work may be AI-assisted.
  • Guide supervisees in responding to clients who use conversational AI for mental health advice.
  • Have constructive conversations about inappropriate, undisclosed or excessive reliance on AI.

Workshop Content

Four Areas of Focus

TOPIC 01

Understanding AI in the Context of Supervision

Explore how AI works, how it is being adopted in psychology and education, and what happens when supervisees are more familiar with these tools than their supervisors.

TOPIC 02

Privacy, Ethics and Clinical Governance

Examine the Australian Privacy Principles, informed consent, confidentiality and data security. Consider supervisors' responsibilities when supervisees use AI tools in clinical practice.

TOPIC 03

AI Use Cases and Risk Management

Identify appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI, including AI scribes, clinical support tools and AI co-therapy. Explore risks such as inaccurate outputs, algorithmic bias and compromised clinical safety.

TOPIC 04

The Supervisory Relationship in the Age of AI

Develop an approach to contracting for AI use, evaluating authentic supervisee competence and navigating challenging supervisory conversations. Apply these skills through case studies and experiential activities.
